Best Execution in Crypto Swaps: Slippage, Price Impact and Better Rates

What best execution means for a crypto swap, why live quotes for the same swap were 5% apart, and how to end up on the right side of the gap.

Short answer

Best execution in a crypto swap means you receive the most of the coin you want, after every cost, for what you send. The headline exchange rate is only part of it. Fees, slippage, price impact and the network fee all come off before the coins reach you.

The prices for the same swap differ a lot between services. On 30 September 2026 we asked SwapBee's 23 providers to quote 0.1 BTC to ETH. The 18 that answered were almost 5% apart: the best quote paid 3.1176 ETH and the worst 2.9629 ETH, a gap of about $415 on a swap worth $8,367. The rest of this guide explains where that gap comes from and how to get the right side of it.

What best execution means

For a swap, best execution is the largest amount received for a given amount sent. It is not:

  • the rate shown on a price-tracking site, which no one may actually fill at your size;
  • the service with the lowest listed fee, because a service can charge nothing and still give you a worse rate;
  • the fastest quote, which can pay noticeably less.

To judge a quote, you need one number: how much lands in your wallet.

Four things that cut what you receive

The spread

Every service buys at one price and sells at another. The difference is the spread, and it is often where the service earns its money. It doesn't show up as a fee, so a "zero-fee" swap can still be expensive.

Price impact

A decentralised exchange (DEX) prices tokens from a pool of liquidity. A large trade against a small pool pushes the price against you as it fills. The bigger your trade relative to the pool, the worse your average price. DEX aggregators split large orders across several pools to reduce this.

Slippage

Prices move between the moment you get a quote and the moment your swap runs. Slippage is the difference between the quoted and the actual price. On a volatile pair, or on a slow blockchain, it can be large.

Network fees

You pay the blockchain's fee to send your coins, and the cost of sending the new coins to you is usually built into the quote. Fees vary by network: Tron is usually cheap, while Ethereum gas costs more and rises when the network is busy. On a small swap, network fees can matter more than the rate.

Slippage tolerance: your safety limit

Some swaps let you set a slippage tolerance: the most the price may move against you before the swap stops. The trade-off is simple:

  • A low tolerance (0.25% to 1%) protects your price, but the swap may fail if the market moves quickly.
  • A high tolerance (2% to 5%) lets the swap go through in a fast market, but you may get a worse price.

For most swaps, 1% is a sensible start. Raise it only for volatile tokens or thin markets, and only as far as you need.

On SwapBee, the setting appears when the chosen provider supports it: DEX-based routes such as 1inch, 0x, KyberSwap, LI.FI and Bungee, and NEAR Intents. You can set anywhere from 0.25% to 5%; the default is 1%. Instant-exchange services quote in their own way and don't use this setting.

Why quotes differ so much

We sampled live SwapBee quotes on 30 September 2026. Quotes change every few seconds, so treat these as an example rather than a price list.

Swap Quotes received Best Worst Gap
0.1 BTC → ETH 18 3.1176 ETH 2.9629 ETH 5.0%
1 ETH → USDT (Ethereum) 22 2,676.31 USDT 2,550.15 USDT 4.7%
500 USDT (Tron) → USDT (Ethereum) 15 497.93 USDT 474.83 USDT 4.6%
10 SOL → USDC (Solana) 14 1,175.02 USDC 1,120.68 USDC 4.6%

Two things stand out. The gap between best and worst was close to 5% in every case. And no single provider came out on top every time: a different provider won the BTC swap than the ETH swap. That is why checking one service, even a good one, leaves money behind.

How an aggregator finds the best quote

A swap aggregator asks many providers for a price on the same swap at the same moment and lines up what each would pay you. SwapBee requests quotes from instant-exchange services and from DEX aggregators and bridges, and shows every quote as the amount you receive after the provider's fee.

The quote list marks three choices:

  • Best: our recommended pick, ranked on both price and speed.
  • Cheapest: the quote that pays you the most.
  • Fastest: the provider with the shortest average processing time.

The best and cheapest quotes are often the same. When they differ, you choose. There are one-click buttons for best and cheapest; if you want the fastest quote, compare what it pays first, because it can be much less.

Tips for a better result

  1. Compare the amount you receive, not the rate. It already includes the provider's fee and the rate.
  2. Size your swap to the market. A large trade in a thin token loses to price impact. Split it or choose a route with deeper liquidity.
  3. Mind the network fee on small swaps. On a small swap, the network fee can be larger than the difference between quotes. A cheaper network may make more sense.
  4. Don't wait too long after quoting. A quote with a countdown holds only until the timer runs out; after that, the amount changes.
  5. Set a sensible slippage tolerance. Start at 1% and adjust for the pair.
  6. Keep a refund address ready. If the price moves beyond your limit, the swap stops and the coins go back to the refund address you gave.

FAQ

Is the best rate always the best choice?

Usually. It pays you the most. But if you need the coins quickly, you may accept a little less for a faster provider. Look at both before you pick.

Why did I receive less than my quote?

Most often slippage, where the price moved while your swap ran, or the network fee to deliver your coins. If the difference is within your slippage tolerance, that is expected. If it is larger, contact support with your swap details.

What is price impact?

It is how much your own trade moves the price. It matters most for large trades and small-cap tokens on a decentralised exchange.

The swaps in the table: BTC to ETH, ETH to USDT, USDT (Tron) to USDT (Ethereum), SOL to USDC.
